Scripture: Proverbs 9:1-18
• Is there any warning for me to heed?
MESSAGE: Scripture Union Daily Guide 23rd October 2020
Both Wisdom and Folly are here personified and then contrasted. Wisdom is portrayed as a lady who prepared a rich banquet and invited all to come and eat from her table (vv.1–6) whilst Folly is a seducing woman who parades in the streets to entice men into fornication (vv.13–18).
What are their similarities and differences? The verses between the two pictures of Wisdom and Folly (vv.7─12) tell us about the differences of our response to either of them. However, note that the key to today’s reading is in v.10. Check this out. Each of us, knowingly or unknowingly, is governed by a set of values by which we live.
The two rival feasts to which we are invited illustrate two specific principles by which we can live (v.10, 17). If you choose to live in the fear of the Lord, Wisdom’s appeal will make sense to you. But if your philosophy of life is from v.17, lady Folly will take charge of your life, no matter how clever you are in your own eyes (vv.15–17).
