TOPIC: Same As The Beginning

BIBLE TEXT: JOHN 15:18-27

KEY VERSE: “And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning”
(John 15:27).

MESSAGE: God has not changed the way employed to raise the Church from a small beginning to a mighty one. He called weaklings to be an impregnable Church that has withstood the most powerful forces mankind has seen. He used fleeing Moses to confront Pharaoh. He called herdsmen and simple men and women to record His laws. Finally, He opted for a carpenter and a peasant lady to raise His Son, Jesus Christ. Christ Himself brought together a group of unlearned and ignorant men to “go… into all the world, and preach”.

When Christ entreated for His disciples shortly before concluding His earthly work, it was a prophetic prayer: “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word”. Since then, faithful Christians who believed Jesus through the disciples’ word have functioned in the power of that prayer. God uses ordinary people to do His extraordinary work, the same way He did it in the Old Testament and in the early Church. When Jesus told His disciples that they “also shall bear witness”, He was looking at both the disciples and contempoary Christians to get the work done. He expects us all in our little corner to go about God’s business everywhere we find souls through any means.

To do this great work, the presence of the Comforter is available to support and assure us of success. There will be revival and a repeat of the old-time movement of great crowds turning to Christ from sin and Satan if ordinary men and women do this extraordinary work for the Lord.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Preaching is an extraordinary business by ordinary people.

TOPIC: Consequences Of Pretence

TEXT: MARK 12:38-44

KEY VERSE: “Which devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation”
(Mark 12:40).

MESSAGE: Pretence is synonymous with hypocrisy, which is sinfulness dressed up in the garment of righteousness to hide the filth.

This is true of the Scribes in today’s text, who pretended to be true religious leaders by wearing religious garments and acted in a pious way to gain status, recognition and respect. Though, they exploited the people through their religious activities and position, they took time to offer long prayers. The Lord, knowing their impure motives, exposed them by cautioning the people against their sins of pride and hypocrisy. He had earlier rebuked and pronounced woes upon them (Matthew 23:14,15), and now declared damnation on them.

Believers need to take heed to the warning of the Lord. We should know that true followers of Christ are not distinguished by showing off religion, praying unscripturally in the public glare and serving as unsaved workers. Unlike the scribes, our service of giving unto the Lord whether small or big, in secret or in public, should be done faithfully, without pretence and out of a pure heart. Note that, religion without righteousness equals rebellion against God’s word which attracts damning consequences.

God requires that we serve and worship Him in spirit and in truth. Those who believe they can act piously in pretence to gain the adulations of men will eventually discover to their loss that God only accepts and rewards services rendered in holiness and righteousness before Him.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Hypocrisy is foolishness before God.

Deeper Life Daily Manna 18 September 2018 Devotional by Pastor W.F. Kumuyi

TOPIC: Access To Eternal Life

TEXT: MATTHEW 19:13-22

KEY VERSE: “Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me”
(Matthew 19:21).

MESSAGE: A story was told of a fourteen-year-old Hindu boy who greatly despised Christianity. At a point in his life, he decided to go in search for God the Father of Jesus Christ. He was so desperate that he felt he could no longer live in this world without knowing who God was. Jesus then revealed Himself unto him. The boy said, “I thought I would see Ramah or Krishna, but I saw Jesus”. Having found the true God, he gave up the comfort of his father’s house due to intense persecution, to keep his faith. Eternal life is for those who are ready to give up the mundane things of this world.

Jesus revealed Himself to the boy in order for Him to distinguish the path between eternal life and eternal doom. The young man in the text claimed to have been keeping the six commandments Jesus listed from his youth, which were all referring to outward relationships to others. His inner depravity was however exposed when Jesus told him: “…go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven”. When we embrace Christ, we are not only set free from outward sin, but we equally experience heart transformation that grants us a right attitude towards God and men.

To have eternal life requires one to have a personal and abiding relationship with God. He will also possess a renewed mind that prevents him from using his possessions selfishly. Nothing should be too big or special to forego if we are to follow Him who offers to us a free passage to eternal life. Deeper Life Daily Manna 18 September 2018 Devotional
