2018 JAMB: UTME candidate who hid phone in pant arrested

Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) personnel on Tuesday arrested two persons suspected to be using a cell phone to commit malpractice during the on-going Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Commandant of NSCDC in FCT, Patrick Uba, announced the arrests to newsmen when he monitored the examinations in Abuja.

Uba said that the suspects were apprehended at Baptist Academy Centre, in Karu where one of the suspects, called Joy, went into the examination centre with a cell phone, which was among the banned items.

“She concealed the cell phone in her panties, went into the hall undetected and while the exam was going on, she brought it out to use.

“With the CCTV cameras in the hall, live activities are being transmitted and members of JAMB personnel and security on ground were able to detect what she was doing and arrested her.

“At the point of interrogation, she mentioned one Andrew, her accomplice, whom she said introduced her to the act and was sending her supposed answers to the questions, via the phone.

“They are both in our custody, we would carry out further investigation and arrest other accomplices if traced and they would be prosecuted in the court of law.”

Joy told newsmen that her act was an accident, adding that she was caught before she could use the phone.

“Other candidates were also making use of other materials too, I wasn’t the only one, but I did not report them, “she said.

Joy, who said she wanted to study Business Administration in the university, added that she had written the examinations more than five times without success.

Reacting to the incident, JAMB’s Head of Media, Mr Fabian Benjamin, said that the candidate was initially spotted from the surveillance camera at the JAMB headquarters in Bwari.

Benjamin noted that all centres conducting the examinations had surveillance cameras, used to monitor every activity in the examination halls.

“When we saw what was happening at Baptist Academy, we immediately dispatched a team to make the arrest.

“This should serve as a deterrent to others; there is no short cut to success, whatever you do at the centre, you would be spotted, it is not business as usual.”

Why the man in Aso Rock is not Buhari – Ex-APC spokesperson, Abdullahi

Former National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bolaji Abdullahi, has shared his reasons the Muhammadu Buhari Nigerians voted into power in 2015 is not the same President at Aso Rock today.

Abdullahi, who was part of the mass defection from the ruling party, called on Nigerians to jump out of Buhari’s train, adding that the man presiding over the affairs of the nation today was not the leader Nigerians trooped out enmasse to elect in 2015.

He said this Monday in a chat with Vanguard in reaction to the vote of no confidence passed on President Buhari on Sunday by leaders of the Northern Elders’ Forum.

The Director, Communications and Strategies of the PDP, Presidential Campaign Organisation pointed out that he was not joining the cloning debate, but insisted however, that Buhari had dumped the principles for which he was widely adored.

He said, “Some of us risked our political careers to rally round Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 and today we have realised that we are in a one-chance vehicle. But I say that having realized where we are, it is time to get down from that one-chance vehicle.

“The Northern Elders Forum was one of the strongest supporters of Buhari in 2015 but they have now realised that the Buhari we have today is the not the Buhari they voted for in 2015.

“The Buhari most of us risked our political careers for was the Buhari whose memory we carried with us since 1983. That Buhari had zero tolerance for corruption and was a strong -willed leader.

“But the Buhari of today has been receiving corrupt people into his party who are hoping he will give them cover. Today, the position of the Northern Elders Forum has vindicated some of us who saw the wisdom in leaving the party (APC) to join the crusade to rescue Nigeria.”
