THE IMPROPRIETY OF JACOB’S CURSE ON REUBEN
Wednesday, 06 Adar, 5778 = Wednesday, February 21, 2018
“Reuben, thou art my firstborn… Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch” (Genesis 49:3-4). Daily Devotional 21 February 2018 by Steve Ogan.
Jacob imposed a curse on Reuben for sleeping with Bilhah his wife at the point he was supposed to pronounce a blessing on him. “And Jacob called unto his sons, and said; Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days. Gather yourselves together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your father. Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the Excellency of dignity, and the Excellency of power: Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.” (Genesis 49:1-4).
As we noted earlier, all the foundational fathers of Israel were born in Nisan, the first month of the Bible calendar, and they also died in Nisan. The patriarch followed the pattern of birth and death of Jesus, who was born during the Passover and also died in Nisan, during the Passover. Remember that the 14th day of Nisan is the day scripturally stipulated to consecrate the firstborn of God’s people. Conversely, it is also the day to deal a deadly blow to the firstborn of the wicked who enslave and ensure that God’s people do not fulfil their redemptive roles. The firstborn of the wicked are their spiritual infrastructures for perpetuating bondage. This is why God killed the firstborn of the Egyptians at midnight on the very day He called for the consecration of the firstborn of the righteous.

It is ironical that Jacob cursed his firstborn in the season of Nisan when he should bless him. He laid the foundation for the death and devastation of people from the heritage of Reuben at the very point of his death when he should have reversed any curse upon his firstborn. Hence, there is no better time to reverse any curse placed on any firstborn than in the Jewish twelfth month of Adar.
Daily Devotional 21 February 2018 by Steve Ogan KEY PRAYER FOCUS
1. PRAY AGAINST THE SCOURGE OF IMMORALITY AND INDECENCY IN THE LIVES OF FIRSTBORN CHILDREN: “Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart” (2 Timothy 2:22).
2. PROCLAIM THE LIBERTY OF GOD UPON ALL FIRSTBORNS: “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound” (Isaiah 61:1).
