Serena Williams knocked Jo Konta out of the Australian Open today – and then claimed the British No1 is a future champion here.
The world No 2 was ultimately too quick and too strong for the world No 9 as she won 6-2 6-3 in 75 minutes.
But the American, who will reclaim the top spot in the rankings by winning an Open record 23rd Grand Slam on Saturday, was full of praise for Konta .
“She has been playing so well,” said Williams. “She won in Sydney. I have been watching her in the locker room and has been cleaning up her matches. She is definitely a future champion here for sure. I am just so happy to get through.”
Konta reached the semi-final here last year and won her last event at the Sydney International.
Williams won her 34th Grand Slam semi-final despite making only 45% first serves – and making her frustration clear on court.
