JTF kills suspects escaping with sack of guns in Bayelsa state

Troops of the Joint Military Task Force in the Niger Delta, Operation Delta Safe, have reportedly killed two persons suspected to be members of a gun-running gang during a “shoot-out’’ in Bayelsa State.

It was learnt that the incident took place at the waterfront of Polaku community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state.

The reported “shoot out” was said to have caused pandemonium in the area as people scampered to safety.

It was further learnt that the gang was allegedly conveying a consignment containing items suspected to be guns through a boat to Polaku from Igbedi community in neighbouring Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA of the state.

Community sources that confirmed the incident identified one of the victims as the boat driver popularly known as Mike. However, they could not ascertain the identities of the others.

It was learnt that the boat driver was not a member of the gang but was allegedly hired by the hoodlums to convey them to Igbedi without knowing the mission of the suspected gunrunners.

He was said to have initially turned them down when they approached him but later agreed to carry them to Igbedi after they promised to pay him a mouth-watering fare.

Efforts to confirm the report from the Coordinator, Joint Media Campaign Centre, ODS, Lt.-Col. Olaolu Daudu, were unsuccessful as his mobile phone failed to connect.
