Hector Bellerin named in Spain squad for European U21 Championships despite Arsene Wenger complaints

Hector Bellerin has been named in Spain’s squad for this summer’s European Under-21 Championships, despite calls from Arsene Wenger for the right-back to skip the tournament.

Arsenal’s manager is desperate for Bellerin, who has featured in 40 of Arsenal ‘s 50 games this season, to rest up over the off-season but it now seems he will not get his wish.

“It’s not ideal after a long season,” Wenger said when asked about Bellerin travelling with Spain Under-21s.

“He should have a rest and prepare for next season. The Spanish players love to play for their country and I think he will go as he loves to play for Spain.”

Speaking last month, Bellerin said of this summer’s competition: “I really want to play. Representing Spain is very important. If [Spain Under 21 manager Alert] Celades gives me the chance I’ll be there.

“Those are opinions of the managers. I have to keep working. The truth is that I had a difficult injury but I think that I am at 100 per cent now and I’ll try to prove it when I get the chance.”

The tournament gets underway on June 16 and runs until June 30.
