In furtherance of the fight against all forms of sexual abuses against women and girls, the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA Bayelsa State Chapter on Wednesday 8th February, 2017 organized a one-day Interactive Session with pageant organizers, beauty queens, models and teenagers in Yenagoa.
The event held at the FIDA Bayelsa Secretariat had in attendance Miss Anyadike Unoaku, Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria 2015 and Guy Murray-Bruce, Vice President, Silverbird Group.
In her opening remarks, Dise Sheila Ogbise-Erhisere said the interactive session is coming at a time when several girls are been molested, harassed and intimidated in Bayelsa State.
According to the FIDA Bayelsa Chairperson the session is aimed at sensitising the pageant industry especially beauty queens on their legal rights.
Ogbise-Erhisere noted that the beauty queens plays strategic role in the development of society through their various pet projects and programs.
Presenting her pet talk, Miss Anyadike Unoaku told the beauty queens and models to take education seriously because it is the bedrock of their development.
The Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria, MBGN 2015 revealed that she had to abandon the pageant in 2014 to face her studies in school after passing the audition but she still won when she recontested in 2015.
She adviced them to be focused and always do a background check on pageant they want to contest to understand their goals and objectives adding that she never contested for Miss Nigeria because she wanted to go to the International scene to contest for Miss World.
Unoaku promise to partner with FIDA Bayelsa to champion the course of ending all forms of Gender Based violence in the society.
In a presentation titled ‘Understanding the Legal Framework Regulating Pageantry in Nigeria’, Barrister Boma Miebai pointed out the need for girls to know the laws regulating the industry in order not to fall foul to organizers.
Boma Miebai, who is also the Financial Secretary of FIDA Bayelsa, cited sections 34(1)(a) and 42(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) provides them the right to fair contest.
She beauty queen to contact anytime their rights are breached by the organizers.
Also speaking at the session, Mrs. Juliet Pulu-Zifawei, Director of Girl Child Protection Bureau said this is a good step that will redirect the minds of the Ijaw girl child to be focused and educated.
She said the present administration is passionate on issues that affects women and children in the state thus the creation of the office, call for partnership to educate the girl-child.
Guy Murray Bruce, the Vice President, Silverbird Group noted that the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria will be 30 years; within these thirty years there has not been any scandal of sexual harassment.
He promised to work with FIDA Bayelsa to bring sanity in pageant industry in Bayelsa State.
The Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria later pay a courtesy visit on Ebiere Musah, Commissioner for Tourism Development, Bayelsa State.
Also hosted to a dinner by Mrs Juliet Pulu-Zifawei at her residence.
