Leading 2-0 on aggregate after the first leg a fortnight ago, a disappointing first-half display saw United fall behind to a controversial Tom Huddlestone penalty. That saw Mourinho confront referee Jon Moss – with whom he has a history – in the tunnel at half-time.

Unquestionably Mourinho also dug out one or two of his players after a non-descript first period at the break, for United came out looking meaner, more focused, and levelled through Paul Pogba’s toe poke.
