Protests have broken out at several US airports where travellers were being held, including a gathering of several hundred people outside San Francisco’s main airport.
There was also a raucous demonstration of at least 2,000 people at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport .
Hameed Khalid Darweesh, a translator and assistant for the US military in Iraq for 10 years, now fleeing death threats, was among at least a dozen people detained at JFK on Friday and Saturday.
Separately more than half a million British people signed a petition to cancel Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK amid a growing backlash.
The number of signatories soared from only 60 on Saturday afternoon to 500,000 by 6.20pm on Sunday.
It reached the 100,000 needed to be considered for debate by MPs just after midday.
Numbers then steadily rose throughout the afternoon as the controversial ban continued to spark anger across the world, with the petition averaging more than 1,000 signatures per minute.
