TOPIC: ONLY BELIEVE

Bible Text: Luke 7:19-30

Key Verse: “Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached” (Luke 7:22).

Shortly after Christ was introduced to Israel, king Herod clamped John the Baptist into prison for speaking against his adulterous relationship with his brother’s wife, Herodias. Meanwhile, John’s disciples kept him abreast of Jesus’ activities. But due to his challenges, over which he thought Jesus would have come to his aid, he began to express doubts about the messiahship of Christ.

Jesus could not rebuke John because He knew his doubts were natural, but He responded in a way that John would understand. Like John the Baptist, some believers sometimes think they are neglected and forgotten when facing challenges, thereby having their faith weakened. Unfortunately, some brethren do not empathize with them during these trial times. Such Christians may even portray a sanctimonious character, condemning the afflicted brethren. They would gossip and cast aspersions on them. But the Scripture says, “Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man” (Colossians 4:6).

A person who is already down does not need condemnation but encouragement and comforting words. Today, many people always find reasons to do or believe whatever suits their purposes. But their actions will not justify them before God. The Scripture says, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12). We need to re-examine our lives and make it right with God.

Thought for the day: Give no room to despair but let your heart be stayed on Christ.
